About

Jicheng "Cho" Qiu

Singer|Songwriter|Composer

Jicheng Qiu is a composer and musician from Wuhan, China, currently based in Arnhem, the Netherlands. His early connection to music was shaped by his grandfather’s passionate singing and an old, slightly battered piano that became his first instrument. Growing up, Qiu often questioned his place in a world that seemed to value grades above all else. Music became his refuge, offering a way to define himself beyond academic expectations. Like many teenagers stumbling through life with more questions than answers, he somehow felt an urgent need to decide his entire future. In the midst of this chaos, music emerged as both a safe haven and a guiding light, helping him turn uncertainty into purpose.

In 2017, Qiu studied Jazz Vocal and Songwriting at Koyo Conservatory in Kobe, Japan, earning his first music-related certification. Returning to China, he worked as an independent musician, creating, producing, arranging, and teaching music. During this time, he self-taught composition and completed projects for small games, advertisements, and his first film score in 2019. Recognizing the need to refine his craft further, and realizing that winging it—while fun—has its limits, he is now pursuing a degree in Composition for Film and Theatre at ArtEZ University of the Arts to perfect his skills.

Qiu’s journey through roles as a singer, songwriter, and educator has given him a broad perspective and a deep understanding of music. This diverse background enables him to explore creative possibilities with openness and adaptability. His curiosity drives him to experiment with new ideas and delve into the historical and cultural contexts behind music, enriching his compositions with depth and authenticity. By combining this exploratory mindset with a strong commitment to quality, Qiu crafts music that is both technically refined and emotionally resonant. Whether it’s composing for film, theater, or games, his ability to connect diverse influences and channel them into cohesive, impactful works has become a defining element of his artistic voice.
